NYC GROUND MURAL
New York City, NY
Commissioned by the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), this 5,500-square-foot ground mural was created as part of a public art initiative to improve school safety while transforming the street into a more welcoming and engaging public space.
Painted directly onto the roadway, the large-scale design uses bold geometric forms, vibrant colour, and flowing movement to create a highly visible landmark that encourages drivers to slow down and helps define the space as one centred around people rather than traffic. The composition was carefully developed to work at multiple scales, creating a strong visual impact from surrounding buildings while remaining engaging for pedestrians experiencing the artwork up close.
Beyond its visual impact, the project demonstrates how public art can support safer streets, strengthen neighbourhood identity, and encourage greater community use of public spaces. By combining placemaking with traffic-calming principles, the mural transforms everyday infrastructure into a colourful civic landmark that serves students, families, and the wider community.
